Community-centered leadership for Pitt County’s public schools

If elected to the Pitt County Board of Education, I will place my energies into three distinct areas: supporting teachers and staff, nurturing students, and engaging parents and guardians in the school community.

Teachers are the foundation of Pitt County Schools and therefore, a central priority of my tenure will focus on recruiting and retaining dedicated, effective teachers through the creation of maintenance of an equitable work environment, competitive salaries, and the support of the community. Over the next few months, I will be meeting with teachers and staff in District 8 to find out what their greatest needs and challenges are, and how the school board can support them.

Just as important to the success of our public schools is a thriving, engaged student body. In 2024 it is more challenging than ever to be a student and a citizen. From threats of violence to pandemics and budget shortfalls, our students are navigating challenges that previous generations never had to manage. To ensure that this generation of students can focus on their studies and their social and intellectual growth, I will advocate for a safe, inclusive, and intellectually stimulating learning environment for all Pitt County children. Whether they need access to the Academically or Intellectually Gifted program (AIG), an Individualized Education Program (IEP), or access to counseling and other social services, it is the duty and honor of our public school system to serve every child in Pitt County.

Parents and guardians are the final key needed to create a flourishing public school system. I believe that my engagement with my child’s school as a member of our PTA’s Executive Board, has made his experiences there richer and more meaningful. But as a working parent, I also understand the differing needs and schedules of our public-school families; not everyone has the time or ability to participate in fundraisers, meetings, or school events. Therefore, as a member of the school board I will work with each school’s PTAs to think about and implement more inclusive ways to engage all parents and guardians in the school community.

Support our students

  • Ensure that all students receive the instruction they need, including those with special education requirements
  • Provide resources that help our students learn conflict resolution and empathy skills
  • Educate students on media literacy to ensure their internet use is productive, responsible, and healthy
  • Create an in-school environment that is safe, welcoming, and inclusive

Support our faculty and staff

  • Recruit and retain top-quality faculty
  • Provide teachers with continuous professional development opportunities
  • Celebrate our faculty and staff achievements
  • Cultivate and support teacher agency via mini grants and other initiatives
  • Listen and engage with faculty and staff

Support our families

  • Provide parents and guardians with multiple ways to get involved with their school
  • Diversify the methods and platforms used to communicate with parents and guardians
  • Ensure that parents and guardians have multiple opportunities to see how their students are engaging in academic and extracurricular activities
  • Reach out and listen to parents and guardians
